How One Medical Professional Found Relief with a FWA Roster

The importance of flexible work arrangements for medical professionals cannot be overstated.

They work long hours, often sacrificing their own well-being to look after others. The ability to have a more flexible schedule can make all the difference in maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

This was the situation faced by one AMPS member, who contacted us for assistance with an application for a Flexible Workplace Agreement (FWA) roster. The member had reached a point where they needed more flexibility in their schedule to accommodate personal responsibilities and maintain their own mental and physical health.

The process of applying for a FWA roster can be daunting, especially when dealing with a large employer. The member had a meeting scheduled with their employer's HR team, and they were understandably nervous about the outcome. That's where the AMPS came in.

They were assigned a case manager to provide support, advice, and advocacy prior to, and throughout the meeting.

The meeting with the HR team was a success. Both parties were understanding of the situation and willing to work together to find a solution that worked for everyone involved. The HR team was receptive to the information provided by the member and the case manager, and they appeared neutral in their decisions.

For the member, this was a huge relief. They had been struggling for some time with the demands of their job and the need for more flexibility. The FWA roster provided them with the opportunity to balance their work and personal life, which was essential to their overall well-being.

This experience highlights the importance of having support when navigating complex workplace issues. Medical professionals, like all employees, deserve to have access to resources that can help them advocate for their own needs and rights. The AMPS is committed to providing that support to our members.

Unfortunately, not all medical professionals have access to the resources they need to achieve a flexible work schedule. Many are stuck in inflexible positions, unable to make the necessary changes to accommodate their personal lives. This can lead to burnout, stress, and other mental and physical health issues.

It's time for employers to recognize the importance of flexible work arrangements for medical professionals. These individuals work incredibly hard, often in high-stress environments, and they deserve the ability to balance their work and personal lives.
One of the major barriers to achieving this balance is the traditional culture of the medical profession. Long hours and intense workloads are often seen as a badge of honour, and those who prioritise their personal lives are sometimes viewed as less committed to their jobs.

But this mindset is harmful and unsustainable. Medical professionals need to be able to prioritise their own well-being, just like anyone else. They should not be expected to sacrifice their personal lives for the sake of their job.

Employers need to take a proactive approach to creating flexible work arrangements for medical professionals. This can include options like job sharing, part-time work, and flexible scheduling. By providing these options, employers can ensure that their employees are able to maintain a healthy work-life balance and avoid burnout.
